Michael Stipe, the former lead singer of R.E.M., is navigating a complex landscape of music and hospitality as Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd prepares to launch a new hotel brand named ‘REM’ in Macau. The hotel, a renovation of the Countdown hotel at City of Dreams, represents a significant investment of approximately US$125 million and is set for a soft opening in the second half of 2026.
The revamped hotel will feature 330 rooms, including 150 high-end luxury suites, and aims to enhance the integrated resort experience in Macau. “REM marks the start of an unprecedented journey of inspiration, further strengthening City of Dreams’ unique position as an integrated resort,” a spokesperson for Melco Resorts stated.
Stipe’s own musical journey has been marked by a long-awaited solo album, which has faced delays since the release of his first single in 2019. He expressed the pressure of meeting high expectations, saying, “I want it to be great, but I’ve got the pressure of having been in R.E.M. and it’s a high bar, because I want this to be as good as that, and that’s near impossible.” He aims for the album’s release by the end of 2026.
The connection between R.E.M. and figures like Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love runs deep, with Stipe having written the song “Let Me In” in tribute to Cobain. Additionally, two songs from R.E.M. are believed to be inspired by Love: “Country Feedback” and “Crush with Eyeliner.” This historical context adds layers to the current developments surrounding Stipe and the new hotel brand.
The Countdown hotel closed for renovations in 2021, paving the way for the ambitious remodeling project that is now taking shape.
