Severe Weather Warnings Issued
“We know you have important places to be,” stated BC Ferries as they announced multiple cancellations due to severe weather conditions affecting the region.
Environment Canada has issued a severe weather forecast for high winds in the Strait of Georgia, predicting westerly wind gusts of up to 90 km/h. The cold front crossing Vancouver Island is expected to bring particularly strong winds along with continued potential for snow in Greater Victoria.
As a result of these conditions, several ferry sailings have been cancelled, including the 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm departures from Swartz Bay, as well as the 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm sailings from Tsawwassen. Additionally, sailings at risk of cancellation include the 3:00 pm from Tsawwassen and the 4:00 pm from Swartz Bay.
To accommodate travelers, BC Ferries has scheduled additional round-trip sailings for 8:00 pm from Swartz Bay and 10:00 pm from Tsawwassen, although travelers are advised to check for updates due to the unpredictable weather.
Local residents are also being warned of potential power outages and damage to roofs, fences, and trees as a result of the high winds. Environment Canada has indicated that these conditions could lead to significant disruptions in the area.
Furthermore, snow chances linger, with forecasts suggesting that 5 to 10 cm of snow could accumulate in high elevations on Vancouver Island.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the impact from this weather system, but authorities are urging residents to stay informed and prepared.
As the situation develops, BC Ferries and local officials will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as necessary.
