Boston Band Mourns the Loss of Lead Singer Tommy DeCarlo
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026,” announced DeCarlo’s family. The lead singer of the Boston band died at the age of 60 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
DeCarlo was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2025, following a sudden brain bleed that required emergency surgery. During the procedure, doctors discovered cancerous masses on his brain and another spot on his lungs.
Having joined the Boston band after the death of original lead vocalist Brad Delp in 2007, DeCarlo quickly became an integral part of the group. He toured with Boston for nearly two decades, helping to keep the band’s legacy alive.
Tom Scholz, the band’s founder, reflected on DeCarlo’s impact, stating, “Tommy was a competitive athlete and yet a gentle soul who his son and many others remember as a sweet man who did not deserve to be cut down at such a young age.”
DeCarlo’s journey with the band began as a fan before he stepped into the spotlight. His passion for music was evident, and he often expressed gratitude for the opportunity to follow in Delp’s footsteps, saying, “I truly have to thank Brad Delp for helping me develop that gift.”
In addition to his work with Boston, DeCarlo started a band called Decarlo with his son in 2012, further showcasing his dedication to music and family.
As the Boston band prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its self-titled debut album in 2026, the loss of DeCarlo is felt deeply by fans and band members alike. The band’s most recent musical circuit was the 2017 Hyper Space Tour.
To assist with DeCarlo’s medical expenses, his family launched a GoFundMe page, which successfully raised over $56,000, surpassing its $50,000 goal with contributions from around 450 supporters.
As fans and fellow musicians remember DeCarlo, his legacy within the Boston band will continue to resonate through the music he helped create.
