Understanding the Challenges Faced by Vegans
A study conducted by Aya Aboelenien at Concordia University between 2017 and 2022 sheds light on the relational fractures experienced by vegans in an omnivorous society. The research, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, highlights the complexities that arise when individuals with different dietary preferences interact.
The study identifies several types of fractures that vegans encounter. Co-performance fractures occur when vegans introduce novel elements to shared practices, such as family meals, which can lead to tension and misunderstandings. Additionally, co-learning fractures arise within the vegan community, particularly when new vegans seek advice from more experienced members.
Marketplace fractures are another significant challenge, stemming from a lack of establishments that cater to vegan dietary needs. This scarcity can make it difficult for vegans to find suitable dining options, further complicating social interactions.
To navigate these challenges, vegans often adopt various social skills, including decoding, decoupling, divesting, and chameleoning. These strategies help them manage conflicts and maintain relationships despite dietary differences.
Zeynep Arsel, a co-author of the study, noted, “We wanted to look at these fractures from the vegan perspective, since most people are omnivorous and familiar with trying to accommodate others’ dietary needs.” This perspective is crucial in understanding the unique struggles faced by vegans.
Aboelenien emphasized the personal nature of these challenges, stating, “Many of the people I spoke to really wanted to discuss the personal struggles they faced, which in many instances discouraged them from maintaining a vegan lifestyle.” This highlights the emotional toll that dietary choices can have on interpersonal relationships.
The research involved a comprehensive approach, including interviews, participation in vegan festivals, protests, and social media analysis, providing a well-rounded view of the vegan experience.
As the study brings to light the difficulties faced by vegans, it underscores the importance of understanding and accommodating diverse dietary preferences in social settings. The findings may encourage further dialogue and awareness around the challenges of maintaining a vegan lifestyle in a predominantly omnivorous world.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the broader implications of these findings on societal attitudes toward veganism and dietary inclusivity.
