Mercedes’ Strong Qualifying Performance
Toto Wolff has expressed a sense of relief and satisfaction following Mercedes’ impressive performance during the Melbourne qualifying for the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team outclassed their competition by a remarkable eight tenths, with George Russell securing pole position and Kimi Antonelli finishing just behind him in second place.
Wolff noted that the recent changes in car regulations have allowed Mercedes to showcase their strengths, stating, “I’m so happy that those messy ground effect cars are gone and finally we do what we are best at.” This marks a significant turnaround for the team, which has struggled in recent seasons, achieving only seven wins in the four seasons since the last regulation overhaul.
Challenges Faced During Qualifying
Despite the positive outcome, the path to qualifying was not without its challenges. Kimi Antonelli crashed during FP3, damaging the Mercedes W17, which Wolff described as looking like a “Lego Formula 1 car that was thrown on the floor literally two hours before.” Fortunately for Mercedes, Max Verstappen’s crash in Q1 provided the team with extra time to repair Antonelli’s car before the qualifying session.
Wolff recounted the tense moments leading up to the qualifying session, revealing that he had doubts about the team’s ability to get the car ready in time. “I said five minutes before the start of the session that we wouldn’t make it, and then Max went off, and that gained us the minutes to put the car out,” he explained.
Looking Ahead
While Mercedes has made significant strides, Wolff acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding their understanding of the W17. He remarked, “You can’t really sandbag, or at least we can’t do that, because you never know where the car is.” This highlights the ongoing challenges the team faces as they navigate the complexities of car development and performance.
As the season progresses, further developments are expected as Mercedes continues to adapt and improve their performance on the track. The team’s ability to maintain this momentum will be crucial as they aim to reclaim their position at the forefront of Formula 1.
