According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 early Sunday in Boulder County when he lost control of the vehicle. He collided with a guardrail, struck an electrical pole, and then rolled down an embankment. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene, and police indicated that a preliminary investigation “suggests that speed is a suspected factor.” The investigation is still ongoing. “The entire CU Athletics community is heartbroken over the tragic loss of Dominiq Ponder,” said Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo in a statement to ESPN. “He embodied the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, resilience, and intelligence that were admired by his teammates and coaches. Our thoughts are with his family and all of his teammates during this challenging time.”

Hailing from Opa Locka, Fla., he acted as a backup for the Buffaloes, participating in two games last season and recording two rushes along with a pass attempt. God bless his family & our team, especially our QB room!” The Buffaloes were set to commence spring practice on Monday, but there is no update on whether the start of camp will be postponed following the tragedy.
