What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold at Costco due to potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin that can cause food poisoning. The affected product is identified as one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk.” Although no illnesses have been reported, the recall was initiated following a similar incident in another country.
Why It Matters
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, known for its heat stability, meaning it can survive cooking temperatures that typically kill bacteria. This poses a significant risk, particularly for infants, who are more vulnerable to foodborne illnesses. The CFIA has advised consumers to check their products and avoid using any that are part of the recall.
What’s Next
Parents and caregivers are urged to verify if they have the recalled Kendamil formula at home. The CFIA recommends that consumers do not consume, serve, or distribute the recalled products and instead return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them. The affected batches, produced in May 2025, can be identified by their codes: 897274 and 888632. Kendal Nutricare, the manufacturer, has stated that while these batches meet European safety standards, they do not comply with Health Canada’s stricter guidelines.
