What Happened
Oregon Potato Company LLC has voluntarily recalled approximately 55,689 pounds of frozen blueberries due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall affects products distributed in four U.S. states—Michigan, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin—as well as Canada. The recall was initiated on February 12, 2023, and was classified as a Class I recall on February 24, indicating a serious health risk.
Why It Matters
The FDA’s Class I designation signifies a reasonable probability that consuming the contaminated blueberries could lead to severe health consequences, including serious illness or death. Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The recalled blueberries were packaged in 30-pound corrugated cases and 1,400-pound totes, but were not sold directly to consumers in retail stores.
What’s Next
Consumers who may have purchased these frozen blueberries are advised to check their freezers for the affected products. The lot codes for the 30-pound cases include 2055 B2 (expiration date July 23, 2027) and 2065 B1/B3 (expiration date July 24, 2027). The 1,400-pound totes have lot codes 3305 A1 and 3305 B1, both expiring on November 25, 2027. Those who find these products should not consume them and should dispose of them immediately. The Oregon Potato Company has not issued a public news release regarding the recall, and further updates may be provided by the FDA as the situation develops.
